Vane is a weather routing and race analysis tool for sailors. This page says exactly what it keeps, why, and what leaves the service. It describes the software as built, not an intention.
What is stored about you
| Data | Why | Kept |
|---|---|---|
| Email address | To identify your account, confirm it, reset a password, and send receipts | Until you delete the account |
| Name | Optional. Only to address you in an email | Until you delete the account |
| Password | To sign you in. Stored only as a scrypt hash, never as the password itself | Until you delete the account |
| Your boats | The dimensions and polar you enter, so routing matches your boat | Until you delete them or the account |
| Counts of routes and debriefs | To apply the monthly allowance on a free plan | Per calendar month |
| Plan and subscription reference | To know what you have paid for | Until you delete the account |
| GPS tracks you upload | To produce a race debrief. Processed for the request and not retained | Not stored |
What is not stored
- Card details. Payment happens on Stripe's or Apple's own pages. No card number, expiry or security code ever reaches Vane, in any form.
- Your position. If you allow location access, it is used on your device to centre the map. It is not sent to the server or recorded.
- Analytics and advertising. There are no third-party trackers, no advertising identifiers, and nothing is sold or shared for marketing.
Where forecast requests go
Drawing a map or routing a course fetches weather and chart data from public sources. Those requests carry the area of sea you are looking at, which is inherent to asking for a forecast there. They do not carry your identity.
| Service | For |
|---|---|
| NOAA (GFS) and ECMWF open data | Global wind forecasts |
| Open-Meteo | Ocean currents, sea level, waves, and multi-model point forecasts |
| Amazon Web Services open data | Terrain and bathymetry tiles used for the coastline and land avoidance |
| Esri | The base map |
| OpenStreetMap Nominatim | Searching for a bay, harbour or town by name |
| Bureau of Meteorology | Australian observation stations used to check the local wind model |
Payment
Subscriptions bought on the web are handled by Stripe, and subscriptions bought inside the iOS app by Apple. Each is given your email address and what you are buying so they can charge you and send a receipt. Each tells Vane only that a payment succeeded, and a reference for the subscription. Their own privacy terms apply to what they hold.
Vane sends email for one of three reasons: confirming your address, resetting a password, and receipts. There is no marketing email, so there is nothing to unsubscribe from.
Deleting everything
Open the plan panel and choose Delete my account, in the app or on the web. That removes your account, your boats, your plan, your usage history and every signed-in session immediately. It cannot be undone, and nothing is retained afterwards except what a payment provider must keep for its own tax and accounting obligations.
Security
Passwords are hashed with scrypt, which is deliberately slow and memory-hard. Session tokens are random, and only a digest of each is stored, so reading the database does not yield a usable session. Changing a password signs out every device. Your boats and your plan are scoped to your account and cannot be read by another.
Children
Vane is not directed at children and does not knowingly hold data from anyone under 13.
